On June 5, 1995, Trooper Chong Soo Lim was killed in the line of duty. At 11:56 pm, Trooper Lim’s  squad was struck from behind by a pickup truck on Interstate 90. The squad car became engulfed in flames. Trooper Lim, who was in his squad completing citations for a traffic stop, was killed as a result
of his injuries suffered in the crash.  Trooper Lim had been assigned to District 15 for only a short time, being a recent transfer from District
Trooper Lim was a graduate of Von Steuben High School in Chicago, and of the University of Illinois at Chicago. In January of 1990, Trooper Lim became a member of Cadet Class 87 at the Illinois State Police Academy. On June 1, 1990, Trooper Lim was assigned to District 3, now District Chicago.  During his many years in District Chicago, Trooper Lim was often recognized for his professionalism, dedication, and motivation. On more than one occasion, he was commended for exceptionally high activity, and he received many letters of thanks from the citizens for whom he routinely made an extra effort. His consideration and kindness when dealing with citizens in need, whether they were stranded motorists or accident victims, reflected Trooper Lim’s dedication to public service and to the ideals of the Illinois State Police.
